Type of protected area - Where it is located
Typology: State Natural Reserve; established with D.M.A.F. August 13, 1980; Wetland of international importance (Ramsar) recognized with D.M. May 9, 1977, n. 657; WWf Italy oasis since 1968.
The Lake Burano State Nature Reserve protected the coastal brackish lake of the same name; it occupies an area of about 410 hectares in the Municipality of Capalbio (GR).

Lake Burano is a coastal brackish lake, about 3 kilometers long, surrounded by sandy dunes and Mediterranean formations on one side, by lands cultivated by the others. The vegetation is typically Mediterranean with cuddly juniper, mastic, lilac and groves with scattered specimens of holm oak and cork. Halophilous flora on the coast and marshes in the marshy areas. There are also extensive wet meadows subject to seasonal flooding. Rich is the dune flora made up of sea lily, santolina, sea urchin, Ammofila arenaria.
Very rich lavifauna, formed by both sedentary and migratory and wintering species: cuckoo, mallard, pink flamingo, teal, marzaiola, pintail, wigeon, shoveler, tufted duck, tufted duck, pochard, red-breasted merganser, coot, goose wild, great egret, and many others. Among the birds of prey: albarella reale, marsh harrier and emery and, in spring, the biancone, known as the snake eagle.
Among mammals, alongside rare surviving species, such as listrice and otter, very common entities live, including fox and wild rabbit. Among the reptiles we find the terrestrial and marsh tortoise, cervoni, vipers, biacchi, saettoni, lizards and lizards.
