Origin, classification and history

Origin: Hungary.
F.C.I classification: Group 1 - shepherd dogs and cattle dogs (excluding Swiss cattle dogs).

The Pumi (Pumi Kutya) is the most recent among the Hungarian Shepherds. This breed descends from the crossing of a "Puli" with other ancient breeds of German and French shepherd dogs, all of whom had erect ears. The breed is thought to derive from "Pomerania", the historical region of Central Europe, from which the name Pumi takes its cue. In Hungary the breed is highly appreciated as a shepherd dog for the management of flocks. In dog shows, despite its popularity in Hungary, it is poorly represented. The Pumi is therefore a relatively modern dog, endowed with exceptional aesthetic and character qualities. Unfortunately there is no certainty as to how the breed was created and how it evolved, therefore only assumptions can be made. The most realistic of these hypotheses states that the breed derives from the crossing of a "Puli" for a "Picard". Only about eighty years ago, however, the Pumi was considered distinct from the "Puli" and bred as a breed in its own right.

General aspect

Medium-sized, vigorous dog with Terrier characteristics. The head is elongated, more developed in the muzzle. The ears are erect, folded at the tips. The tail is horizontal. The trunk is collected, the coat of medium length, never felted; the eyes and muzzle are clearly visible. It is multi-colored, never graying.

He has a very lively temperament. It is bold and bold; it is often used to gather large livestock. He has a highly developed sense of smell. It can be used to destroy pests, such as rodents. He is exceptional as a watchdog for his tendency to bark and whine. It is also used as a companion dog. This breed is still held in high regard today by Hungarian shepherds. Despite the small size it sometimes gives demonstrations of great aggression, never towards the people it knows.

- males between 40 and 44 cm
- females between 37 and 41 cm.

Trunk: gives the impression of solidity: the height at the withers barely exceeds the length of the trunk.
Head and muzzle: the head is small, fine; seen from the front it looks round, seen from the elliptical side. The skull is rounded, the nasal bridge rectilinear and shorter than the skull, the stop clearly marked.
Truffle: the truffle is dark and broad.
Teeth: the teeth are correct and complete.
Neck: the neck is robust.
Ears: they are hanging, in the shape of a "V".
Eyes: they are brown in color, with a lively and attentive look.
Limbs: straight, muscular.
Shoulder: with correct angle.
Tail: curved flow on the kidneys.
Hair: it is so thick that it is difficult to examine the various parts of the body; the head seems round because of the hair that falls on the eyes, hiding them. The coat is made up of a coarse textured fur and a fine undercoat: the right proportion between coarse and fine determines the "narrow" felt shape that is the desired one. If there is too much hair, the coat remains sparse, open; if there is, on the other hand, too fine, excessively extensive felting occurs. The so-called "cordate" coat is composed of uniform, descending and closely wavy hairs. Small bioccoli of this shape have a tendency to felt less, rather forming long cords. The hair is longer (8 to 18 cm) on the rump, on the kidneys, on the thighs (in some cases it almost touches the ground when the dog is in an upright position), while the shorter one is on the head and feet.
Allowed colors: depending on the variety, black, black with reddish shades, various shades of gray; or white.
Most common defects: smooth hair, short hair, not stranded hair, incorrect teeth, defective back, non-standard sizes, colors not allowed by the standard, depigmented truffle, incorrect gait, insufficient musculature, badly worn tail, atypical head, aggressive or shy character, limbs not straight .
