Goat breeds: Boer

Goat breeds: Boer

Origin and diffusion

The Boer goat is a breed of goat selected from the early twentieth century by Boer breeders in South Africa. It probably arises from crosses between the indigenous goat breeds (bred by the San and Nama), the European ones brought by the colonists and perhaps also strains of Indian origin.

Morphological and productive characteristics

Greater aptitude for meat production.
It is a very resistant breed and can also adapt to semi-desert climates such as those of the South African hinterland and Namibia. In addition to South Africa, the Boer goat is now bred in many states, such as in the USA, New Zealand and Europe (Switzerland).
